New Dallas Fire-Rescue Station 41 Reopens

The new and improved Dallas Fire-Rescue Station 41 has reopened.  

Former Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki, who also donned the number 41, joined a February 15 reopening ceremony to dedicate the new building.

Designed by PGAL, the new facility replaces the original 1950s-era building that was destroyed by an EF-3 tornado that devastated the region on October 19, 2019.

Challenged to replicate the original building with no construction or as-built documents available, PGAL created a building information model by laser scanning Dallas Fire Station 45, an identical building that went into service the same year as the destroyed building.

Changes in city ordinances and ADA accessibility requirements required the design team to enlarge the public and personnel parking lots as well as to create greater setback from Royal Lane to better accommodate today’s apparatus sizes.

PGAL’s design pays homage to the Mid-Century Modern era in which the original fire station was constructed, while conveying a more modern aesthetic. Mid-Century Modern aspects include the stacked vertical brick, continuous clerestories, exposed wood beams and acoustical roof deck, and arrangement of the interior living spaces around a small courtyard.
