PGAL Creates Canned Food Structure for Arlington Food Assistance Center

For the 4th consecutive year, PGAL’s Alexandria office participated in AIA Northern Virginia’s 15th Annual Canstruction® competition, featuring structures that are designed and built entirely from canned food. These structures will be on display at Washington Dulles International Airport from October 26 to November 4.

More than 6,000 cans were used to construct PGAL’s 2018 entry - “Wave Goodbye to Hunger”—a six-foot-high structure that represents a family of sea turtles riding an ocean wave. The majority of the world’s sea turtles are threatened or endangered because of habitat disruption and difficulty finding food.

“Our structure represents the many individuals who go without basic needs every day,” says PGAL’s Business Development Director Molly Statler. “We hope to ‘wave goodbye to hunger’ by raising awareness and supporting our local community.”

After the event, all of the cans used to construct the structures will be donated to the Arlington Food Assistance Center, which distributes supplemental groceries to nearly 2,200 Arlington families each week.

Hosted annually in more than 150 cities around the world, Canstruction® events have donated more than 50 million pounds of food to local food banks since 1992.
