$6.5M Library Renovation Breaks Ground

In a poetic combination of old and new, a beloved1974 Dallas branch library will retain its original triangular skylight, exposed wood rafters and brick walls but will gain 5,000 SF of high efficiency space distinguished by modern design elements such as angular walls and columns, metal finishes and extensive glass to dramatically increase natural light.

Designed to achieve LEED Gold, the Fretz Park Branch Library will have a Black Box Theater, a consolidated, highly recognizable entry, new classrooms and study spaces and twice its current collection.

Renovation and expansion of the original 15,000 SF library will also provide:

• More computers and laptop outlets with free Wi-Fi throughout. Upgrades include furniture with plugs and USB ports so patrons can charge devices without leaving their seats.
• A “pinwheel” floorplan design that builds upon the library's original cross-shaped footprint by filling in spaces with angular elements.
• A separate children's reading room, a juvenile area separated from small children's reading area, a teen area with funky furniture and fixtures, an efficient staff workroom and manager's office and a staff lounge with adjacent staff shower/restroom.
• Repurposing of the existing triangular skylight as the focal point of a new lobby to serve as central access point to the building's after hours use of theater and classrooms.
