Acres Homes Multi-Service/Community Center

The renovation of this Houston community center enhances the city’s ability to provide essential services to residents, creating a more functional, welcoming space for diverse community programs.

The two-story, 50,000-square-foot facility houses multiple public service agencies and programs, including senior citizen services, a citizens’ council, childcare, a Houston Police Department storefront, the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, senior fitness classes, and computer literacy courses.

Faced with a tight budget, the design team developed a solution that optimizes space utilization while expanding capacity for new programs. A thorough assessment of the facility identified underutilized areas, leading to the creation of three flexible classroom and workshop spaces accommodating up to 100 people. These new spaces enable the center to serve a broader range of community needs without exceeding budgetary constraints.

To enhance the facility’s atmosphere, the team collaborated with stakeholders to implement a fresh interior color palette throughout key public spaces, including the community atrium, auditorium, restrooms, and clinic. The revitalized interiors introduce warmth and vibrancy, fostering a welcoming environment for residents who rely on the center’s resources.

Features Include:

  1. Two-story, 50,000-square-foot facility housing essential public services

  2. Optimized classroom and workshop space to support expanded programming

  3. Updated interior color palette to create an inviting community atmosphere
