Palihotel San Diego

The historic Hotel St. James, an architectural jewel in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter, was acquired by a visionary developer in 2021 with the intent to rejuvenate this iconic structure.

Originally constructed in 1913, this eleven-story Victorian marvel once commanded the skyline, offering panoramic, unobstructed vistas of the city and bay. Today, it stands revitalized as Palihotel San Diego, a vibrant urban retreat that marries historical grandeur with contemporary sophistication.

The transformation preserves the hotel’s defining architectural features, including its original two-story neon sign, opulent chandeliers, intricate tin ceilings, and stained-glass windows. These elements, alongside the stately marble staircases, evoke the elegance of the early 20th century, seamlessly integrated with modern amenities.

Palihotel San Diego now boasts 122 guest rooms, each reflecting a modern, design-centric ethos. The hotel’s nautical-inspired aesthetic is complemented by a new restaurant and an exclusive rooftop amenity deck. This elevated space offers daily social hours and unparalleled views of the city, providing a refined yet approachable environment.

This revitalized architectural gem not only celebrates San Diego’s rich historical tapestry but also serves as a stylish, convenient base for travelers to experience the city’s vibrant culture and contemporary attractions.

PGAL served as Architect of Record with Designers Paligroup for this project.
