Florida Atlantic University Comprehensive Master Plan and Update Davie Campus

When Florida Atlantic University acquired additional land for the Davie Campus in 2006, administrators sought a guiding document to establish a true presence, distinct architectural character, and physical connection between the two halves of the expanded campus.

While the Davie Campus was included in the 1996 master plan PGAL completed for Florida Atlantic University’s (FAU) flagship Boca Raton Campus, the acquisition of additional land necessitated a separate master plan for the expanded, 38-acre site. Planned development was a milestone effort for the university, signifying a major commitment to the region.

The 10-year planning horizon integrated the newly acquired 20-acre property with the existing, 18-acre campus. The master plan focused on growth, expansion, phasing, and programming for the enlarged campus.

The planning team, which included TLC, prepared an infrastructure survey identifying the systems that would connect the established campus to the undeveloped new property. The team also analyzed existing facilities for condition, operations, and architectural quality.

The primary planning challenge was the integration of a campus divided by a three-lane, heavily trafficked roadway running north to south through the campus. PGAL examined several solutions, including a sky bridge and academic building over the roadway, or a parking structure. The chosen solution — a simple traffic signal with enhanced crosswalk — augments the visual connection between the university’s east and west campuses.

The master plan identified key structures to establish campus hierarchy, including an existing education building on the eastern end, a proposed science building on the western end, and several academic and support buildings that flank the main axis and line the edges of the campus.
